![]() The Hailuoto and Bay of Liminka area is situates just south of Oulu and about 600 km north of the Finnish Capital, Helsinki. It gains its special character from the unique combination of vast stretches of peat bog with the taiga forest zone. The gradual r ising of the land out of the sea and the broad shore meadows provide ample nesting places for a wide variety of birds: the yellow-breasted bunting on the Bay of Liminka itself, waders on the shores of Hailuoto and on the nearby mires, the Ural Owl on its evening flights... and many others. A total of 170 species are known to rest in the area. The Bay of Liminka and the largest island in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia, Hailuoto, offer the best birdwatching opportunities of anywhere in Finland - in fact one of the best natural sites in the whole of Europe.
